5th anniversary: We’re growing and so are our startups
The greatest thing about being an investor is to support companies, young entrepreneurs, bold and visionary teams, taking their disruptive projects to the next stage. Our role as VC is much more than just writing a check; each new investment demands our time, attention, and mentorship. That is why we are so proud to look back and see that after five years, we have built a portfolio of 15 investments, still active, and most of them continuing to be supported through follow-on investment rounds, despite the difficulties caused by the pandemic.
Without taking each team’s credit, at Bright Pixel we want to believe that this is also a sign that we identified the most promising verticals — digital infrastructure, cybersecurity and retail tech — and that we have the ability to spot good teams and competitive solutions in these industries.
Building a Venture Capital strategy is a marathon, not a sprint. It is mainly about establishing two fundamental pillars: 1) being surrounded by people who have an extremely specialized and knowledge vision of the sector, and 2) building a broad base of human and institutional relations that contributes to a climate of trust between peers.
So, in the past five years we tested some business and investment models, conquered our space in the ecosystem, earned the trust of peers and founders in Portugal and more, and built a great network with co-investors, partners and Bright Pixel’s alumni, such as two of our co-founders — Celso Martinho, who is now the Director of Engineering at Cloudflare in Lisbon, and Alexandre Santos, who is launching a new international fund and looking for investment opportunities worldwide.
Now, we are entering the next half-decade more confident, wiser and with a more robust network. For the future, we are looking for the most defying solutions based on emergent technologies such as 5G and improved Connectivity; Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning; Automation; Edge Computing; Cloud Native or Cyber Security and Retail tech — just to name a few.
